Introduction to Foundation Paper Piecing

Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) is a great technique for patterns which have sharp angles and points, and small pieces. To master this skill, we will be using Pen & Paper Patterns “MiniSparrows Block”, which is a free pattern. The link to the pattern will be sent to you when you enroll in class. The block finishes only 3 1/2” x 5 7/8” and you can add borders to make it larger. Used on its own, it makes an adorable “mug rug”. Or if you become addicted to FPP, go big and make additional blocks. The pattern is whimsical and lends itself to using high-contrast scraps for the bird’s head and body, and a solid for the eye, beak and tail with a low volume fabric for the background.

Supplies: • Fabric: Study the photo above to help in fabric selection. Bring FQs, scraps or your favorite charm pack, plus a 5” WOF strip of background fabric. • Rulers: “Add a Quarter” ruler plus a 6½” square acrylic ruler • Rotary Cutter: please put in a new blade! Cutting mats and irons are provided. • Sewing machine in good working order with an open-toe foot, new Microtex 90/14 or 80/12 needle, power cord, foot pedal and bobbins. For thread, I like Aurifil in a neutral color. • General sewing supplies/notions to include fine pins, scissors, Clover clips, seam ripper, and I strongly recommend Mary Ellen’s Best Press or Acorn Precision Piecing Products. Pre-class preparation: print the paper piecing pattern at 100% (do not scale) If you would like help choosing fabrics or have any questions, please contact Annlee by email, annlee.landman@comcast.net or call/text to 970-846-7830. We will take a break for lunch, so please bring something from home (we have a fridge and microwave in the classroom) or you can run out to a local restaurant for takeout
