LOST ART OF HAND QUILTING

Has machine quilting made hand quilting obsolete? Not at all! It remains a viable option to finish your quilts, whether done over your entire quilt or to enhance certain areas. This class will cover how to hand quilt using a lap hoop (traditional stitch and big stitch), how to choose a quilting design to compliment your quilt top, and how to mark your quilt. This class is appropriate for quilters of any experience level and the instructor has been hand quilting for thirty-plus years.

Supply list:

  • Quilting hoop (suggested: 14” round or 12 x 20” oval)
  • Fabric marking tools (suggested: mechanical pencil and charcoal pencil)
  • Needles and thread, choose one or both:
  • Traditional hand quilting: hand quilting thread and between needles (suggested: size 9)
  • Big stitch: sashiko needle (any size) and mid-weight (no 8) perle cotton
  • Thimble - One that fits comfortably on the middle finger of your dominant hand. (suggested: a thimble with a metal rimmed tip)
  • A practice quilt. 2 fat quarters of fabric with a piece of low-loft batting sandwiched between; basted or safety-pinned together
  • The basics: pins, seam ripper, scissors
  • Optional: plastic quilting stencils
  • Optional: bring a quilt top that you would like to hand quilt, so that we can discuss quilting options
