THE LOST ART OF HAND QUILTING

Has machine quilting made hand quilting obsolete? Not at all! It remains a viable option to enhance your quilts, whether done over your ent ire quilt or to enhance certain areas. This class will cover how to hand quilt using a lap hoop (short stitch and long stitch), how to choose a quilting design to compliment your quilt top, and how to mark your quilt.
Supplies:

  • Quilting hoop (wood 14” round or 12 x 20” oval)

  • Hand quilting thread

  • Quilting needles (“betweens” - the larger the number size of the needle, the smaller the stitch - you choose!)

  • Marking tools: mechanical pencil or chalk pencils (light color for dark fabrics, and vice versa)

  • Thimble - One that fits comfortably on the middle finger of your dominant hand. (There are many types: leather, plastic, metal, etc. - I prefer a metal thimble with a lip around the end)

  • A practice “quilt”: 2 fat quarters of fabric with a piece of low loft batting sandwiched between, basted or safety-pinned together.

  • The basics: pins, seam ripper, scissors

  • Optional: bring a quilt top that you would like to hand quilt, so that we can discuss how it could be done.
