FELTED MITTENS WORKSHOP
Denise loves making oh-so luxurious cashmere-lined felted wool mittens (recycled from old sweaters) as presents and gifts. They are uniformly loved by all those so gifted. Remarkably warm, water and wind resistant, easy-to-make, and (almost) stylish! Join Denise as she steps aside from her art quilt persona and teaches a one-day special workshop dedicated to making your own winter-proof mittens, from initial felting through final finishing. Fun and easy; all are welcome, beginners and beyond.
VACCINATION REQUIRED PLEASE
If you want to use Denise's stash of wool, please bring $15 payable to her!

Ironing boards and irons – preferably one set for every six-to-eight students
To Be Brought by Participants:
Sewing machine (and please don’t forget the power cord and foot pedal !!! )
Basic sewing (machine) supplies and notions (thread, bobbins, pins, ripper, etc.)
Walking foot (optional)
New size 14 sewing machine needles
Fabric scissors (full size)
Rotary cutter (cutting mats are provided)
Hand sewing needles (plus thimble)
Decorative buttons, size of your choice (see photos)
Pre-washed and felted (see below) medium-to-heavy wool (or alpaca, or cashmere, or a mix of natural animal fibers) sweater * (no more than 5 to % nylon or polyester, but preferably none; also, do not use “machine washable wool” because it will simply not felt). You can also get a couple of different sweaters for contrast (mainly for the palm or cuff areas) or to make a more complex design (see photos).
Using a washing machine, wash with soap and hot water and hang to dry (using a dryer can clog up your vents). Sweaters will, of course, shrink and felt up (which we want).
Pre-washed and felted lightweight cashmere or merino wool sweater (cashmere really doesn’t felt, but give it a good washing anyway). Duplicate above instructions.
* ARC in Louisville is a great source for sweaters.
