Come give large scale modern paper piecing a try! Violet Craft has a wonderful selection of animal quilts for you to choose from – Lion, Elephant, Wolf, Giraffe – even a Cow. You can choose fabric for a realistic look or you can go modern with wild prints. Kits are available for the Elephant and the Wolf. This class is a great introduction to paper piecing

Supply list:

Any Violet Craft machine sewing pattern (available at Lyons Quilting)

Fabric – This will depend on what quilt you choose and how many fabrics you want to use! The pattern will give you some idea but you should feel to vary your choices. Mary will help you with this – feel free to contact Mary prior to class to discuss.

Machine Sewing Thread – 50 weight neutral color, this thread won’t show

Sewing machine with all the usual supplies, especially a quarter inch foot.  I recommend using a size 80 needle for this project. In this class, you are expected to have experience operating your sewing machine.

Rotary cutter & quilter’s ruler – I recommend that you bring an all-purpose rotary cutting ruler such as a 12 ½” square – Creative Grids makes a great one and it is available at Lyons’ Quilting. Because some of the pieces are quite large, I also recommend that you bring a long ruler.

Add-a-Quarter Ruler – again, there are huge pieces – I recommend a 12” or even better an 18” length.

A piece of template plastic cut 2” to 3” in width and 12” to 18” long.

All your favorite sewing notions such as scissors, tweezers, seam ripper, pins, etc. Mary also recommends Mary Ellen’s Best Press.

We will be taking a lunch break; you can either bring a lunch or we will be placing an order from Lyons Dairy Bar

Pre-class preparation:

You will probably want to make a copy of the piecing foundations included in the pattern (in case you mess up or you want to make another!)

Other than copying, there is no prep work. Mary can also help you with fabric selection during class. You will have time in class to cut, so if you’re not sure what to do you can wait. In this class, you are expected to have experience with rotary cutting.
