HAMPTON BAG
Here’s an easy stylish bag – great for beginners. You can even use a jelly roll or charm pack to reduce the cutting. No zippers, no bias binding, no quilting! The bag features lots of pockets and a sewn-in magnetic closure.
Supply list:
Hamptons Handbag pattern by Pink Sand Beach Designs (available at Lyons Quilting)
Fabric per the pattern. This is a great pattern to use up jelly rolls, charm packs or scraps!
Pellon Fusible Fleece, Décor Bond and Peltex per the pattern. For the Peltex, you can use any variety – not fusible, single-sided fusible or double-sided fusible – they all will work just fine!
1 Invisible magnetic sew-in snap (available at Lyons Quilting) – any size is fine.
Sewing machine with all the usual supplies including a quarter inch foot. I recommend a size 90 needle since you will be both piecing fabric and constructing the bag. For thread, I recommend Aurifil. Some of your stitching will show on the outside of the bag so pick a pretty color!
Rotary cutter & quilter’s ruler – Bring your favorite ruler for cutting and if you have a large ruler, bring that too.
Marking pencils – bring one that will mark on dark fabrics & one that will mark on light fabric.
All your favorite sewing notions such as pins, scissors, tweezers, seam ripper, etc. I also recommend that you bring a bottle of Mary Ellen’s Best Press.
Pre-class preparation: If you complete the cutting prior to class, you may be able to finish the bag in class.
See page 1 of the pattern. Step 1 is all of the cutting. At a minimum, please complete the “Assorted prints cut” section but if you are comfortable with all of Step 1, please do all the cutting.
Step 2 has you sewing the “Assorted prints” into a simple grid. If you want to complete this in advance, go ahead. You need 2 finished pieces according to “Figure 1” and 2 finished pieces according to “Figure 2”.
No time to complete the pre-class preparation? No problem. In class you can work on whatever part of the bag you’re ready for – Mary will have a bag to demonstrate on so even if you don’t complete your bag, you will SEE EVERY STEP. Feel free to take pictures.
