DELIGHTFUL DESERT
These cute critters are really fun to make and the piecing is much easier than you might think. The pattern gives you options for 3 different sizes (the class sample is the middle size). The class covers techniques for success including rotary cutting, accurate ¼” seams and pressing. You are welcome to work on any Elizabeth Hartman pattern – including Fancy Forest, Awesome Ocean, Dogs in Sweaters, or Greenhouse – there are a whole bunch more.
SUPPLY LIST:
Delightful Desert OR ANY ELIZABETH HARTMAN PATTERN – available from Lyons Quilting
Assorted fabrics for piecing the animals or objects plus background fabric per the pattern you’re working on. These quilts look best with lots of fabric, so bring an assortment to class. Mary will help you with color placement and the amounts you need in class. One great way to tackle this is to buy a few fat quarters to get you started, then add to your color scheme with your scrap stash – using lots of fabrics works well. Pick a neutral background that won’t drown out your pretty animals – I recommend solids, near solids, or Moda Grunge.
Sewing machine with all the usual supplies including a quarter inch foot. I recommend a size 80 needle. For thread, I highly recommend Aurifil – any neutral color.
Rotary cutter & quilter’s ruler – Bring your favorite ruler for cutting. Bring smaller rulers if you have them, too. At least one of your rulers (small one preferably) should have a 45° line on it. Please put a new blade in your rotary cutter.
Marking pencils – bring one that will mark on dark fabrics & one that will mark on light fabric. I recommend Sew Line ceramic chalk pencils.
All your favorite sewing notions such as pins, scissors, tweezers, seam ripper, etc. I also recommend that you bring a bottle of Mary Ellen’s Best Press.
Pre-class preparation: None. If you would like help before class picking out fabrics, contact Mary to make an appointment. We will also have plenty of time in class to work on fabric and color choices.
