MONDO BAG

a simple bag, but what a bag! It’s huge, it’s sturdy and yet it’s lightweight. You could take this shopping for a day, pack a picnic in it, lug your quilting stuff around and about 100 other things. This is a great bag for beginners but intermediates will love that you can finish this project during class if you have your squares cut out. The piecing goes extremely quickly. Mary has made the construction even more simple,be sure to look at the supply list for fabric requirements. When you’reready to make more of these, Tracey has purchased the special Mondo Bag interfacing panels.

Supply list:

Mondo Bag pattern

Fabric – If you want the pretty horizontal diamond stripes like the class sample, buy 6 fat quarters. Pick ones that have a lot of contrast – 2 dark ones (we’ll put them on the bottom so your bag doesn’t show dirt!), at least 1 light one and medium tones for the rest. You can also use 2 ½” squares from your stash – you need 192 squares total.

Mary made the lining and handle different colors – you need 3/8 yard for the handles and 3/4 yard for the lining.

Recommended fusible fleece – Pellon 987 – purchase the amount specified by the pattern which is 1 ¼ yards

Thread – 50 wt sewing thread in a neutral color or one that goes with your fabric.

Sewing machine with all the usual supplies, especially a quarter inch foot and a walking foot if you have one.  I recommend using a size 90 needle for this project.

Rotary cutter & quilter’s ruler – bring the longest one you have.

Pins – I recommend bring long flexible pins such as the ones with flowers, butterflies or buttons as heads.

All your favorite sewing notions such as scissors, tweezers, seam ripper, and an applique pressing sheet (if you have one).

We will be taking a lunch break; you can either bring a lunch or we will be placing an order from Lyons Dairy Bar

Pre-class preparation: Please cut your squares before class if possible. If you have them cut out, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to finish the project during class! The good news is that this pattern has an easy way to do the piecing – your cutting does not need to be as precise as you’d normally need for traditional patchwork.

If you’re using the horizontal diamond stripes like the class sample, choose the 2 darkest fat quarters and cut 48 squares that measure 2 ½” x 2 ½” from both of them. From each of the other 4 fat quarters, cut 32 squares that measure 2 ½” x 2 ½”. This will give you more squares than you need, but you’ll have options on how to arrange the colors but you won’t have to do more cutting in class.

If you’re not using fat quarters but using scrappy fabrics instead, cut out 192 squares measuring 2 ½” x 2 ½”.
